Public Policy/Legislation Update as of June 8: The NYS Catholic Conference urges us to sign a petition on the Hyde Amendment which prevents Americans’ federal tax dollars from funding most abortions. Go to www.notaxpayerabortion.com Federally, the Affordable Care Act (ACA) enrollment has again been extended - to August 15; COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act was signed into law; Haiti has been redesigned for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for 18 months; The “Remain in Mexico” policy has been terminated as of June 1; and World Refugee Day is June 20. CATHOLIC ELECTION RESPONSIBILITY - With a crucial election this year, the Public Policy Ministry is focusing on aspects of preparing ourselves to vote. One way is to prepare our conscience in accordance with the information provided by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops on their website and on the “CIVILIZE IT” page which is posted on the Church website under “Peace and Public Policy” documents. Over the next several months, we will be posting prayers and other portions of the Faithful Citizenship documents which are the teachings on the political responsibility of Catholics.
